Ear Hustle: podcast from inside San Quentin prison

Postby FLAMING ATTACK B0T » Jun 28, 2017 2:14 pm

There's been some buzz about this podcast, it's produced in the A/V lab inside San Quentin State Prison. It's basically just stories of life inside, in the voices of the men living there. Each episode has to be approved by the wardens though, and a Lieutenant speaks at the end announcing that everything's been cleared (all in the name of public safety of course, not censorship... ahem).

Episode 1 was alright, #2 just posted today. One odd thing I learned; men in San Quentin are still assigned bunks according to race. This is actual policy. Another odd thing but on the positive side is that there is some leeway in choosing one's cellmate. If they think two men will get along because they're already bros, they'll sometimes let them bunk together.

If there's any interest we could make this thread into a discussion group or something. Every second Wednesday this summer it looks like.

If anyone is still listening, this week's episode was darker than usual. They interviewed guys who had spent years or even decades in solitary at Pelican Bay in northern California. One inmate said (assuming I got the dates right here) think of everything you did between 1989 and 2014 and now imagine you spent most of that quarter century inside a single room instead.

The previous episode seems cute by comparison, especially with the one inmate who took care of bugs and rodents like they were his friends. The warden who came on to give his verbal stamp of approval at the end may have had a different opinion. In fact this was the only time he had an opinion at all, other than to approve the broadcast.

I think they are halfway through the season with episodes now.

really awful and sad. sometimes I listen to the Mumi Abu Jamal podcasts. Leonard Peltier had to do a lot of solitary confinement. it is awful. they deserve human rights.

I have a relative who will be in prison. he's being held til trial. he did something terrible. I can't even talk about it. it is really awful and he is mentally ill and had not had a good situation with medication. I probably will write to him. It has been hard. We are devastated by what he did but I also know it is not who he is and he did not know what he was doing.

I also write to Leonard Peltier. I guess he is using a wheelchair now so he can get around more, and he is learning computer skills. I have sent money to his commissary as well.

It is a good podcast. Sometimes I see things in common with the mental hospital but my stays have only been one month usually.

Prisons should not be for profit. They start having quotas and have to keep their business going. I don't think mental health should be for profit either.

Here is Leonard Peltier's address btw:

I will listen soon, thank you.

Leonard Peltier btw just had triple bypass surgery. They had been neglecting his health in there a lot.
