Introducing Wonko

“It seemed to me,' said Wonko the Sane, 'that any civilization that had so far lost its head as to need to include a set of detailed instructions for use in a package of toothpicks, was no longer a civilization in which I could live and stay sane.”
― Douglas Adams, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

People are strange. Sure, they might think I'm strange. They might even think that you're strange. You might think I'm strange. It doesn't really matter.

On a first impression, they might decide that you fit within what they consider to be 'normal' or that you don't. It's biological because we humans are a bit lazy when it comes to how we use our brains. It's so much easier to label something and have a whole lot of ancient societal concepts associated with it - from gender to color to religion to whatever else, people in a society or community tend to think in terms of "One of us" and "Not one of us".

Labels are walls, and yet even those of us who dislike labels have a tendency to label people who depend on labels. Cavafy wrote about walls:

Without reflection, without mercy, without shame,
they built strong walls and high, and compassed me about.
And now I sit here and consider and despair.
My brain is worn with meditating on my fate:
I had outside so many things to terminate.
Oh! why when they were building did I not beware!
But never a sound of building, never an echo came.
Out of the world, insensibly, they shut me out.

Of course, we managed to break down the Berlin Wall and we can hope that many labels - intangible walls - will be broken down over time because they are no longer relevant.

The Internet has made many walls less relevant. We who all to often fit into the groups of, "Not One Of Us" for others can become a part of "One of us" across distances, across cultures, languages and many other Walls that were put up way before us - and even now.

Anyway... I have to go off and supervise more people who need Toothpick Training and Certification. Maybe we'll evolve beyond that someday...
