a little, new icarus (project) in a little post-industrial playground??
Submitted by icy red on Mon, 06/09/2008 - 7:04pm.I just printed out the friends make the best medicine literature, after finally tracking someone down with a printer. I recently informed a friend/ally from a women's resource center who just started up a feminist book club about the icarus project and told her my crude plans of starting one. She was uber excited and after the book club tommorow we were going to talk organizational and heartfelt talk. My area desperately needs an alternative to the mental health programs we have. I live in a crumbling, post-industrial city in Northeast PA that has lots of potential but requires alot of work. Not having a concrete venue or one space for arts and music and poetry and activism means having disconnected groups across the city. We need cohesiveness definitely to create a cultural and political powerhouse. Exciting things have been happening though, moreso than any other time. Our collective conscious has shifted towards alot of great works. It seems everyone I run into is working on some project, external or internal. So I was thinking of holding it at this bookstore the book club and my garden meetings are at that is owned by an other amazing women and friend. I am so EXCITED! Just throwing out the idea with aquaintances and friends, there seems to be a definite need and a respect that this exists. Thank you so much Icarus Project for doing all the groundwork. This site is such an inspiring and helpful tool! I can't even explain in words, I'd rather just play a mad and dark and hopeful violin tune or something!!! I'll keep posting on what's going on with our group, and if there is any advice about starting something radical in a town that doesn't really have a large continuum of activism please let me know!!!

Good luck!!
